Ambulances are a part of our lives. We count on them in an emergency to save lives and to be there when called. But many people aren’t aware of the art behind emergency medical transportation.

At the corner of 12 Mile and Farmington Road sits emergency medical service provider Parastar, which is part of Beaumont Health. Parastar has been at the 696 building for more than two years.

Parastar provides community emergency transport for a number of Metro Detroit cities, including Farmington Hills, Grosse Pointe, Wayne and more.

“Our main focus is on patient dispatch. Our employees are knowledgeable and prepared for the wide variety of calls we receive,” said Nicholas Beauchemin, Manager of the communications center at Parastar. “We want to make sure we are available at all times when needs arise.”

When you’re the EMS provider for a large part of Wayne and Oakland counties, being busy comes with the territory. Parastar receives anywhere from 1,000 to 1,500 calls each day.

“One of the biggest challenges in the EMS field is staffing to meet the increasing volume of our customers,” said Nicholas. “But all of our employees are certified emergency medical dispatchers, which really helps us find transportation for patients quickly.”

The technology at Parastar helps move patients as fast as possible. Lining the walls are live, interactive maps that show where ambulances are at any time. When a call comes in, dispatchers are able to determine their location, and find which ambulance is close and available for them.

New to Parastar is the call distributor, which automatically forwards a call to whichever dispatcher is available at the moment.

“Before our automatic call distributor, phones would be ringing all day,” said Nicholas. “Now, people who are looking for transportation are connected with one of our team members quicker and easier than ever.”

As Parastar continues to expand, Nicholas believes that Parastar will continue to expand, with the technology and expertise, to meet the communities needs.

“We are constantly looking to grow,” he said. “That way we can continue to deliver great customer service to our clients every day.”
